Earl "The Pearl" Strickland is quite simply one of the greatest American pool players of all time, and one of the best players worldwide to have ever picked up a cue stick. His intensity on the table is often matched, if not overshadowed by, regular emotional outbursts off the table. He is considered one of pool’s most dominant players ever, and its most inscrutable personality.
The self-taught Strickland’s storied career is the stuff of legend. At the urging of his father, he first picked up a cue at the age of eight in his hometown of Roseboro, North Carolina. When he was 14 years old his father took a job in Houston, Texas and the young Strickland followed him there. The teenager had no interest in school, and he instead hit the road with his buddies, traveling the country playing money games.
Strickland ended up back in Texas where he worked for a year running a traveling carnival. He found his way back to pool, toured the nation and became a legendary money game player.
In 1982, at the age of 21, Strickland made his first mark on the pro tournament scene, finishing 9th amongst a stacked field at the $200,000 Caesars Tahoe Classic. With his brash and vibrant personality, along with his fast play and deadly stroke, Strickland became the talk of the tournament.
From 1984 through ’88, Strickland won 15 pro tour titles, including his first two U.S. Open Championships and the 1988 Brunswick World Open. Strickland also earned three Billiards Digest Player of the Year honors (1985, ’87 and ’88), and won more than $225,000 in prize money.
From 1990-’95, Strickland continued his dominance of 9-ball, tallying 11 more titles, including another U.S. Open title, back-to-back WPA World 9-Ball crowns (’90, ’91) and the PBT World 9-Ball title in 1994.
In 2002, Strickland won his record third WPA World 9-ball Championship, defeating the Philippines Francisco Bustamante in Cardiff, Wales. To this day, no other player has ever won more than two WPA World 9-ball Championships.
Strickland has won over 50 pro titles, including an astonishing five U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. He is also a 14-time Mosconi Cup member of Team USA.
