Luther Lassiter, in full Luther Clement Lassiter, Jr., byname Wimpy, (born November 5, 1918, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, U.S.—died October 25, 1988, Elizabeth City), American billiardsplayer who, at the time of his death, was considered by many to be the best nine-ball player of all time.

Lassiter, who dropped out of school at the age of 16 to hustle pool, earned the nickname “Wimpy” because of his seemingly insatiable appetite for hot dogs and orange sodas, which he devoured with the same relish that the character Wimpy lavished on hamburgers in the Popeye comic strip. During his professional career, Lassiter competed in the Jansco brothers’ all-around championships (1962–72) in Johnston City, Illinois, and captured the straight pool title five times, the nine-ball title four times, and the one-pocket title once. He won the all-around title in 1962, 1963, and 1967. Lassiter, who also won the Billiard Congress of America’s(BCA’s) U.S. Open in 1967, was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 1983.
